Building Capacities for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) using Geospatial Technologies in the Horn of Africa
The theme of the project:
Strengthening the capacity and awareness of IGAD member states in the use of geospatial technologies for the Disaster Risk Reduction.
ICPAC has supported the IGAD-UNOSAT project funded by Norwegian Government during 2013/2014. The project aimed at improving the capacity of IGAD staff in the use of GIS for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and implementing an IGAD DRR Geoportal at ICPAC. Phase 2 of the IGAD-UNOSAT project started in July 2014 for one year with the objective of strengthening the capacity and awareness of IGAD member states in the use of geospatial technologies for the Disaster Risk Reduction. The expected outputs from the project include trained and knowledgeable stakeholders in IGAD member states.
Phase 1 and 2: UNOSAT-IGAD Trainings
The participants for the trainings were from the IGAD Secretariat, ICPAC, ICPALD, CEWARN, IGAD Somalia, and the Kenya Polytechnic University.
- First technical training held on 8-19 April 2013, at RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya
- The second technical training held on 10-21 June 2013, at RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya
- Third professional training, held on 9-20 September 2013, at RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya
- Fourth, refresher course on 13-24 October 2014, at RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya
