7.0 IMPACTS ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC SECTORS

The socio-economic impacts indicators associated with rainfall performance are highlighted below including the vegetation conditions.

7.1 Vegetation condition indicators and associated impacts

The satellite vegetation imagery for August 2008 indicates improved vegetation conditions over much of Sudan; western and central Ethiopia; central and northeastern Uganda as well as western Kenya (Fig. 8).

Figure 8: Vegetation anomalies over the GHA during August 2008

7.2 Impacts associated with observed climate conditions during the moth of July 2008

• Improved pasture conditions and water resources in the northern sector of GHA. However, poor pasture conditions and water stress continued over parts of the equatorial and southern sectors of the sub region.
• Good prospects for good agricultural production in western parts of the equatorial sector.
• Increased cases of weather related diseases such as malaria, cholera, pneumonia and flu.
• Destruction of property due to floods in parts of the northern sector

7.3 Potential impacts associated with the September to December 2008 climate outlook

• Increased incidences of malaria in areas expected to receive near to above normal rainfall especially over the northern and equatorial sectors.
• Likelihood of floods in parts of the northern and equatorial sectors.
• Pasture and water resources conditions will continue to deteriorate over the northeastern of GHA.
• Good prospects of agricultural production over parts of the equatorial and northern sectors
