Observed rainfall conditions for March to May (MAM) 2022

Recent rainfall totals

Moderate rainfall between 500 - 1000 mm was observed over a few areas in southwest Ethiopia, in western and eastern regions of Lake Victoria, and in southern parts of Tanzania.

Light rainfall between 200 - 500 mm was observed in southwestern and southern parts of Ethiopia, western and southeastern parts of South Sudan, much of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, western, central and coastal parts of Kenya, and in northern, western, eastern and southern Tanzania.

Rainfall between 10 - 200 mm was observed in southern parts of Sudan, several parts of Eritrea, Djibouti northern central and eastern Ethiopia, over much of Somalia, northern, central and south-central parts of South Sudan, in much of northern and eastern Kenya, and in northeastern and central parts of Tanzania.

Dry conditions (usual during this time of the year) were observed in most parts of northern and central Sudan, and northeastern Somalia.

Recent rainfall anomalies

Wetter than usual conditions were observed in southwestern Tanzania and in western region of Lake Victoria.

Usual rainfall conditions were observed in south-central Sudan, western and southern parts of Ethiopia, northern and eastern parts of South Sudan, in northern and western parts of Kenya, over much of western, central, eastern and southern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and over several parts of Tanzania.

Moderately drier than usual conditions were observed in central and southern parts of Sudan, over much of Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, in northern, central and eastern Ethiopia, in southwestern pats of South Sudan, central, northwestern Uganda, in much of central and eastern Kenya, and in some areas in northwest, northeast and northern coast of Tanzania.

Much drier than usual conditions observed in a few isolated areas in northeastern Ethiopia and northeastern Somalia.

Standardized Precipitation Index

Moderate to severely wetter than usual rainfall conditions were observed in western and southwest Uganda, western and eastern parts of Kenya extending to southwest Somalia, over much of Rwanda, northern Burundi, and in north, central and eastern parts of Tanzania.

Usual rainfall conditions were observed in western and central parts of Ethiopia, southwest and southeast South Sudan, in central and southern Uganda, over margins of northeastern and central Kenya, and in western and southern parts of Tanzania.

Moderately drier than usual to severely dry conditions were observed in western and south-central parts of South Sudan, northern, southern and eastern Ethiopia, over several parts of Djibouti, in northern and central parts of Somalia, northern Uganda, northwestern Kenya, and isolated part of western Tanzania.
