The GMES & Africa project at ICPAC, in collaboration with Dunia Africa and Kenyatta University, organized a Hackathon on Land and Water Mapping. This competition aimed to produce accurate resource maps using Earth Observation (EO) and cloud computing technologies.

Participants focused on leveraging remote sensing data, particularly Copernicus data, geospatial resources, and machine learning techniques to create robust classification approaches for generating precise land and water maps. These maps, spanning multiple years, are intended to support decision-makers, water managers, and conservationists by enhancing resource monitoring and promoting sustainable development in the region.

The competition encouraged innovative solutions that harness the potential of satellite imagery and related datasets to classify and map different water and land types. Participants had access to the DUNIA platform, offering a rich array of remote sensing data, including multi-temporal satellite imagery (Sentinel, Landsat, etc.) and climate data. This provided a valuable opportunity to explore advanced data processing techniques, develop robust models, and employ cutting-edge algorithms for accurate land and water classification and mapping results.
The challenge targeted students from universities, and high schools from various backgrounds early career professionals, and startups familiar with cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence (machine learning, etc.).
