June 2021
  • An estimated 69.5 million people in Burundi, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda were in Crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+) in June 2021. Of these, about 39 million were from IGAD Member States.
  • A further 9 million children across the region, were wasted, with 2.3 million suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
  • Despite a steady increase in humanitarian funding in the IGAD region since the beginning of 2021, the humanitarian response in the region remains underfunded.
  • Wetter than usual conditions are forecasted over much of the region (Equatorial and Northern zones) in July 2021 while average conditions are expected in a few areas in western Ethiopia, over coastal Kenya, in western South Sudan and north-western Uganda.
