IGAD Regional Roadmap for Anticipatory Action
In the Eastern Africa region, humanitarian needs and emergencies are increasing due to more frequent and severe disasters. The traditional reactive approach has proven inadequate, leading to significant human suffering, economic losses, and development setbacks. The region's socio-economic dynamics make it strategically important for comprehensive disaster risk management. However, funding is often insufficient and delayed until hazards become disasters. To better protect vulnerable populations, it is essential to build capacity and develop systems for Anticipatory Action (AA), which involves proactive measures to mitigate predictable hazards before they turn into disasters. Scaling up AA systems is crucial to enhance resilience to weather and climate-related hazards.
The goal of the IGAD Regional Roadmap for Anticipatory Action is to support the development of harmonised, coordinated, and scaled-up AA across the IGAD region.
