Inter-Regional Platform for the Sustainable Management of Desert Locust and Other Transboundary Pests - World Bank Funded Project.
Background
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is implementing a three-year World Bank funded project aimed at setting up an Inter-Regional Platform for the Sustainable Management of Desert Locusts and other Trans-Boundary Pests. The project is part of the World Bank's Emergency Locust Response Program Phase 3 (SSELRP). The project started in is expected to run until August 2024. The project coordination unit is constituted at the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) in Nairobi.
The Platform aims to strengthen synergies, sustained management, and control of desert locusts and other transboundary pests in the IGAD region. The platform will be extended not only to IGAD member states but to all countries affected by the desert locusts and other trans-boundary pests. Operationalization of the platform will be conducted in partnership with the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa (DLCO-EA).
Job description
The overall role of the Desert Locust and Transboundary Pests Focal Point is to coordinate and provide operational support, scientific and technical analysis on transboundary pests, and work-plan activities including liaison roles between IGAD and DLCO-EA. The Focal Points will work under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of IFRAH in close collaboration with DLCO-EA.
Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills The applicant should possess the following; Education requirements:
Advanced degree in plant protection, entomology, pest management, natural resource area, or a related technical discipline degree from a recognized university, and 5 years’ experience on transboundary pests and technical cooperation related activities and project support.
Work experience
- At least a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in plant protection, entomology or related subject.
- Knowledge of desert locust and transboundary pest management and control
- Relevant work experience especially in transboundary pest monitoring and coordination of program activities
- Have initiative, team spirit, and able to work in a multicultural setting
- Relevant experience in coordination of multi-partner initiatives.

- Good planning and organizational skills
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Good knowledge of the IGAD region
- Fluency in English
