1st Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Humanitarian Action
Theme: From Policy to Practice: Strengthening Disaster Risk Management through Anticipatory Action
The Eastern Africa region faces numerous disasters, including droughts, floods, extreme heat, pests, diseases, conflicts, and economic instability, leading to large-scale displacement and severe impacts on lives and livelihoods. The prolonged drought from 2020 to 2023 and El Niño-induced flooding in 2023/24 have highlighted the need for Anticipatory Action (AA).
In 2023, the region reached about 3.6 million people with AA assistance and developed AA plans in seven countries, alongside a Regional AA roadmap. However, AA is still mainly supported by humanitarian agencies, and there is a need for greater government involvement, increased funding, and integration into mainstream systems.
This first-ever Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform (EADP) on AA will review regional progress, share learning, and propose policy, practice, and finance priorities. The event aims to foster coordinated efforts, develop multi-hazard AA systems, and enhance AA integration into governmental and development frameworks. By addressing regional challenges and sharing best practices, the EADP seeks to build resilient, proactive communities capable of anticipating and mitigating various hazards.
