A large area stretching across the northern and central parts of the region was characterized by moderately to severely wet conditions. These areas include western Sudan, western Eritrea, much of Ethiopia, Djibouti and northern Somalia, western South Sudan, northeastern parts of Kenya and northeastern parts of Tanzania.
Moderately Dry to Severely Dry Conditions
Countries with pronounced rainfall deficit included a few pockets of northern Sudan, western South Sudan, southeastern Ethiopia, central Somalia, coastal parts of Kenya and a few pockets in Tanzania.
Wetter Than Normal Conditions (Green and Light Green)
- Much Wetter than Normal (Dark Green): Concentrated heavily over the northern parts of the region including Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and northern Somalia as well as a few pockets in Uganda.

High Rainfall Accumulation (Dark Green to Light Green)
- Highest Rainfall (201–300 mm and 101–200 mm): These values are extremely high for a 10-day period. The dark green (201–300 mm) is focused in isolated pockets within the central region of Ethiopia.
- Significant Rainfall (51–100 mm and 26–50 mm): These categories cover vast areas, forming a wide, central-to-western band across the region, including:
- Most of southern Sudan and South Sudan.
- Large sections of Ethiopia (especially the western highlands).
- Western Kenya and Uganda.
Moderate to Low Rainfall (Yellow and Orange)
- Low Rainfall (11–25 mm and 6–10 mm): These values typically ring the high-rainfall areas and transition into the driest zones. They are concentrated over:
- All countries in the GHA region.
Very Low or No Rain (Light Grey and White)
- Very Low Rainfall (1–5 mm): Forms a major transitional zone across central Kenya, southern Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, and parts of Tanzania.
- Negligible/No Rain (<1 mm or No Data): These dry conditions dominate the Sudan, parts of Eritrea, eastern half of Somalia, and several parts of Kenya and Tanzania.
