Standardized Precipitation Index

Moderately Wet to severely Wet Conditions

A large area stretching across the northern and central parts of the region was characterized by moderately to severely wet conditions. These areas include central Sudan, western Eritrea, south and northwestern Ethiopia, and northern Somalia, western and southeastern South Sudan, western parts of Kenya and northwestern parts of Tanzania.

Moderately Dry to Severely Dry Conditions

Countries with pronounced rainfall deficit included a few pockets in the border region between Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan, southeastern Ethiopia, central Somalia, and a few pockets in Tanzania.

Recent rainfall anomalies

Wetter Than Normal Conditions (Green and Light Green)

  • Much Wetter than Normal (Dark Green): Concentrated heavily over the northern parts of the region including Sudan, South Sudan, parts of Eritrea, Ethiopia, northern Somalia and the equatorial region including eastern Uganda, central to western Kenya and northwestern Tanzania.
  • Wetter than Normal (Light Green): Forms a wide band surrounding the darkest green area, covering most of countries highlighted above.

Near Normal Conditions (Light Blue)

  • Near Normal: Predominantly observed in large parts of equatorial and northern parts of the region including Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya and Sudan.

Drier Than Normal Conditions (Yellow and Orange)

  • Drier than Normal (Yellow) and Much Drier than Normal (Orange): These conditions dominate the northern and southern parts of the region.
    • Significant drier areas cover most of northern Ethiopia, southern Somalia, eastern Kenya, much of Tanzania, northwestern Eritrea and in Sudan.
    • The orange ('Much drier than normal') is evident across most of the countries highlighted.

No Rain (White)

  • No Rain: Indicated in the very northern and eastern dry areas, particularly in northern parts of Sudan, northern Ethiopia, and northwestern Kenya as well as central and southern Tanzania.
Recent rainfall totals

High Rainfall Accumulation (Dark Green to Light Green)

  • Highest Rainfall (201–300 mm and 101–200 mm): These values are extremely high for a 10-day period. Rainfall amounts between 101 and 300 mm was observed in isolated pockets within the central region of Ethiopia and western parts of Kenya.
  • Significant Rainfall (51–100 mm and 26–50 mm): These categories cover vast areas, forming a wide, central-to-western band across the region, including:
    • A few pockets in Somalia
    • Most of southern Sudan and South Sudan.
    • Large sections of Ethiopia (especially the western highlands).
    • Western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and a few pockets in Tanzania.

Moderate to Low Rainfall (Yellow and Orange)

  • Low Rainfall (11–25 mm and 6–10 mm): These values typically ring the high-rainfall areas and transition into the driest zones. They are concentrated over:
    • All countries in the GHA region.

Very Low or No Rain (Light Grey and White)

  • Very Low Rainfall (1–5 mm): Forms a major transitional zone across northern Sudan, parts of Eritrea, Ethiopia, much of Somalia, northwestern and northeastern Kenya, and most parts of Tanzania.
  • Negligible/No Rain (<1 mm or No Data): These dry conditions dominate northern Sudan, parts of Ethiopia, and several parts of Kenya and Tanzania.
