The recommendations by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) for regional climate centres to integrate climate change information into GHACOF to enable the access and use of this information for medium- to long-term decision making is being implemented. Under the Strengthening the Resilience of the IGAD region to the adverse Impacts of Climate Change through effective Adaptation and Mitigation Actions (RICCAMA) project, ICPAC is building on the past experiences of other projects/initiatives that had been undertaken in the region.
ICPAC in collaboration with partners is jointly organizing the Fifty-ninth Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 59) for the October-December (OND) 2021 season to be held virtually on 26 August 2021. The forum will be held within the framework of the IGAD regional strategy for mainstreaming climate information in key socio-economic sectors for sustainable development. The theme of the forum will be "Climate Services for Resilience”.

The forum will be preceded by various workshops including Climate Change Workshop on 24 August 2021 followed by user and sector specific parallel Pre-COF workshop for all sector actors on 25 August 2021.

The overall objective of the workshop is to promote awareness of climate change activities on adaptation and mitigation at regional and national levels among relevant stakeholders. The specific objectives include;

  • Share and discuss plan and preparations for COP26, including the review of latest IPCC sixth assessment report (AR6) for policy makers
  • Share ongoing activities, experiences, lessons learned and plans for promoting climate smart agriculture under climate change
  • Share information on new tools to address climate change at regional and national level
  • Provide highlights on the ongoing review of the IRCCS and collect inputs stakeholders
