Crop season: Highest risk of destruction in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan crop areas. Most of the region falls under high risk due to favourable forecasted temperatures and vegetation, suitable for Desert Locust reproduction and development.

  • Climatic conditions continue to be suitable for desert locust development, especially in South Sudan, Ethiopia, northern Kenya, Somalia, southern Eritrea and Djibouti
  • The breeding areas increased due to suitable conditions and suitable sandy soils in parts of northern Kenya, in Oromiya and SNNPR of Ethiopia, in Somaliland region of Somalia, in Buri Peninsula of Eritrea, and Agig and Alibai in Sudan
  • The wind direction, which greatly determines swarm movement, is forecasted to blow from south to north east in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. Wind directions in the northern region are mostly towards the north and north eastern direction. 

Highest risk areas for invasion based on forecasted climate conditions and vegetation are found below. Highest risk for crop season will be in SouthSudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan crop areas.
