Climatic conditions highly suitable for desert locust development in South Sudan, eastern Ethiopia, northern Somalia, northwestern Kenya, and northeastern Uganda

The most infested areas are rangelands of Kenya and Ethiopia.

  • Wind direction, which greatly determine swarm movement, forecasted to be generally southerly (blowing from south to north) in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
  • Sudan and Eritrea report to have controlled most swarm with intensive surveillance and control.
  • Breeding areas increased in February and March due to suitable conditions & sandy soils in northern Kenya, Ethiopia Oromiya & SNNPR, Somalia’s Somaliland, Eritrea’s Buri Peninsula, Sudan’s Agig and Alibai. Hopper bands in those areas & some young adults already reported.
