Wind forecast
  • The low-level wind forecast for the week indicates that Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania will be under the influence of moist Congo basin westerlies.  
Temperature forecast
  • Relatively cold conditions are expected in north-western Sudan, highland regions of central Ethiopia, western Kenya, southern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and isolated regions of Tanzania and Somalia. Parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties (north-western Kenya), south-western Sudan and Afar region of Ethiopia and coastal Eritrea are expected to experience warm conditions up to 32o C. 
Heavy rainfall
A reduction in total rainfall is expected this week in Kenya, Somalia and Uganda compared to the previous week while an increase in rainfall is predicted over Burundi, Rwanda, and central Tanzania.
  • Very heavy rainfall from 100 - 200 mm (among the top 5% on record) is expected in parts of Rwanda, Burundi, central and southwestern Tanzania, and a small area in southwestern Kenya. 
  • Few locations in north-eastern Kenya and neighboring Somalia are expected to receive 30 - 100 mm of rainfall (categorized in the top 5% of their heaviest weekly rainfall totals ever recorded).  
  • Some parts of the region are expected to remain dry due to the southward withdrawal of the seasonal rains.
