Observed climate conditions for March to May (MAM) 2025

Rainfall

Recent rainfall totals

Moderate to high rainfall amounts of exceeding 500mm was observed in a few areas in southwestern part of Ethiopia, in parts of central and western Kenya, in part of southern Tanzania.

Moderate rainfall amounts of between 201-500mm were observed in much of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, in southwestern Ethiopia, southern Somalia, in western, central, southern, eastern and coastal Kenya, and in several parts of Tanzania.

Light rainfall between 11 - 200 mm was observed in several parts of Eritrea, Djibouti and South Sudan, in northern, central and eastern Ethiopia, in northern and central Somalia, in northern and eastern parts of Kenya, and in central Tanzania.

No rainfall or less than 10mm was observed in much of Sudan, western Eritrea, in parts of southern Djibouti, and in parts of northeastern Somalia

Standardized Precipitation Index

Moderate wet to severely wet rainfall conditions were observed in eastern South Sudan, in western and southwestern parts of Ethiopia, in southern Somalia, in several parts of Kenya, in eastern Uganda, southern Burundi, and in northern, western and parts of southern and coastal Tanzania.

Moderately dry to severely dry conditions were observed in western and southern Eritrea, in southern Sudan extending to norther and western South Sudan, in northeastern and eastern Ethiopia, in northern parts of Somalia and in parts of southwestern Uganda.

Usual rainfall conditions were observed in the rest of the region.

Recent rainfall anomalies

Wetter than and much wetter than usual conditions were observed in several parts of north, central and eastern Kenya, in southern Somalia, in southern parts of Ethiopia, and in northwestern and southern parts of Tanzania.

Drier than usual conditions were observed in western and southern parts of Eritrea, in southern parts of Sudan extending into northern parts of South Sudan, in northeastern Ethiopia, in much of Djibouti and in northern parts of Somalia.

No rain condition was observed in the several parts of Sudan.

Usual rainfall conditions were observed in much of the rest of the region.
