Recent rainfall totals

High Rainfall Accumulation (Light Green to Dark Green)

  • Highest Rainfall (101–200 mm): These values were concentrated in southwestern parts of the region including western parts of Tanzania.
  • Significant Rainfall (26–50 mm & 51–100 mm): These values were recorded mostly in Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Moderate to Low Rainfall (Orange & Yellow)

  • Low Rainfall (6–10 mm & 11–25 mm): These values typically ring the high-rainfall areas and transition into the driest zones. They are concentrated towards the northern parts of the region spilling into Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Very Low or No Rain (White & Light Grey)

  • Very Low Rainfall (1–5 mm): Forms a major transitional zone in southeastern South Sudan, parts of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya.
  • Negligible/No Rain (<1 mm or No Data): These dry conditions dominate Sudan, South Sudan, northwestern and eastern parts of Ethiopia, and several parts of Somalia.

Wetter Than Normal Conditions (Green and Light Green)

  • Much Wetter than Normal (Dark Green): Concentrated heavily over the southern parts of the region including western Tanzania, and Burundi.
  • Wetter than Normal (Light Green): Forms a wide band surrounding the darkest green area, covering most of countries highlighted above.

Near Normal Conditions (Light Blue)

  • Near Normal: Predominantly observed in the southern parts of the region including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Drier Than Normal Conditions (Yellow and Orange)

  • Drier than Normal (Yellow) and Much Drier than Normal (Orange): These conditions dominate regions to the north. They include northern Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya. The orange ('Much drier than normal') is evident across most of the countries highlighted.

No Rain (White)

  • No Rain: Concentrated in the northwestern parts of the region including Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia.
